My name is Chimwala and I am 78 years old. I am the eldest elder in the Yao tribe and my name means stone. I was born on the South-West of Africa. I have had a lot of events in my life and living and living alone in my hut, in my village is going to be one. I can never forget my life.

The memory I truly remember is when I first was introduced to the Yao tribe. Until I was 6 years old, I was lonely but then I saw two girls and then we were friends forever. Just then, I knew my life was going to be hard but I had to believe in myself.

When it was the year 1843 and when I was 14 I was offered a job. As soon as possible, I told my dad and he told me to take it even though I did not want to. But I did because we needed the money. Eventually, I got used to it. While I was working, I found a partner and without warning, we got married!

Several months later, I gave birth to a baby! I named her Njemile! Watching her growing up was dazzling! I felt upset when she left to get a hut. When it was the year 1875, Njemile came with news. She had a baby! But she left as soon as she told me.

Later in the term we wrote setting and character descriptions based on the end sections of our book.

Along the dry, dusty road, came a army of slavers approaching Chimwala, feeling strong the slavers asked “where is the rest of your tribe”? Chimwala ,sat gracefully and attempt to take one big breath and answered “it is just me in this cold, damp hut”. In disbelief, the slavers started chopping down the plants, and crops angrily due to Chimwala’s lies.

After a while, of chopping the ancient plants the leader, of the slavers grunted “there is no way that anybody can get across this river” Feeling smug Chimwala sat down all settled and started reminiscing of her daughter Njemile and the whole of her tribe, wondering if they will be safe.

Old, wrinkly Chimwala felt relived, that the slavers were going to leave empty handed. Chimwala smirked curiously and spoke underneath her musty, fishy breath “my plan is working", whilst looking back Chimwala could see all the aggressive slavers walking past her, angrily considering they had wasted all their precious time.
